Nightlife in Los Angeles: Sunset Strip gigs, rooftop drinks and the 2am cut-off
LA doesn't have one nightlife strip. It has a dozen, spread across a city you'll cross by car, and they all stop pouring at 2am.
The short version
- You must be 21 to drink in the US. Bring your passport, because door staff check ID hard [1].
- Bars in California can't sell or serve alcohol between 2am and 6am. Last drinks come before 2am, not at it [2].
- Drinking from an open can or bottle on the street, the beach path or in a park is an offence in the City of Los Angeles [3].
- Cannabis is legal for adults 21 and over, but you can't use it in public places [4].
- Plan your ride home before you go out. LA is a driving city, and you won't be.
Where to go out: the main areas
The first thing Aussies notice is the distance. A night that starts in Santa Monica and ends in Silver Lake is a 40-minute ride at best. Most locals pick one area and stay there.
| Area | Vibe | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| West Hollywood and the Sunset Strip | Famous, loud, rock history | Big-name gigs, late cocktails |
| Hollywood | Clubs, tourists, neon | Dancing, big DJ nights |
| Downtown LA and the Arts District | Rooftops, warehouses, breweries | After-work drinks, views |
| Silver Lake and Echo Park | Indie, relaxed, a bit scruffy | Small gigs, neighbourhood bars |
| Santa Monica and Venice | Beachy, casual, earlier nights | Sunset drinks, a quieter crowd |
| Koreatown | Late food, karaoke, busy bars | Groups, cheap-ish eats with drinks |
If you've just arrived, Silver Lake and Echo Park feel the most like a night out in Fitzroy or Newtown. West Hollywood is more like a dressed-up Saturday in South Yarra.
Bars, rooftops, clubs and live music
Live music
LA is one of the world's great gig cities, and the small rooms are where it shines. These venues all had shows listed for November 2026 when we checked.
- The Troubadour, 9081 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood. A small, legendary room with something on most nights.
- Whisky a Go Go, 8901 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood. Rock and metal on the Sunset Strip, with shows booked right through to New Year's Eve 2026.
- The Echo and Echoplex, 1822 W Sunset Blvd, Echo Park. Two stages under one roof, mostly indie, punk and up-and-coming acts.
Many gigs are 21+, and some are all ages with wristbands for drinkers. Read the ticket before you buy, and bring ID either way.
Rooftops
Downtown has the views. Perch, 448 S. Hill Street near Pershing Square, is a French-style rooftop bar on the 16th floor. Its website lists the rooftop open from 5pm Monday to Thursday, 4pm Friday and midday on weekends. Get there before sunset if you want a seat.
Clubs
- Academy LA, 6021 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood. A nightclub with big house and techno DJs on Friday and Saturday nights in November 2026.
Clubs in Hollywood often have dress codes, cover charges and guest lists. Buying a ticket online is usually cheaper and quicker than paying at the door.
Bars and pubs
LA's bar scene is about neighbourhood spots more than big pubs. Cocktail bars, craft breweries and dive bars are everywhere. If you're after an Aussie crowd or a cricket screening, our guide to Australian restaurants, cafés and bars in Los Angeles covers the venues with an Aussie connection.
Prices: an LA night out vs home
Finder's April 2026 pint price map doesn't list Los Angeles. It does put a pint in New York at about AU$10.15 and in Sydney at about AU$10.35 [5]. LA bars aren't cheap either, and the menu price isn't what you'll pay.
| What you see | What you pay | Australia |
|---|---|---|
| Menu price | Menu price plus sales tax | Tax already included |
| Bar tab | Plus a tip on top | No tipping expected |
| Club entry | Cover charge, often cheaper online | Similar for big clubs |
| A cocktail | Well above the price of a beer | Same story at home |
Tipping isn't optional in US bars. Bartenders earn a big chunk of their pay from tips, so budget for it on every round.
Ways to keep the tab down:
- Go to happy hour. Plenty of LA bars discount drinks in the late afternoon and early evening.
- Order a local craft beer instead of a cocktail.
- Buy gig and club tickets online, early.
- Split rides home with mates.
The rules that catch Australians out
Drinking age and ID
The legal age for buying and drinking alcohol in the US is 21 [1]. Smartraveller notes that state laws on possession and consumption vary [1]. In practice, LA bouncers card almost everyone, often regardless of age. An Australian driver's licence may not be accepted, so carry your passport. If you're living here, a California driver's licence or ID card saves you carrying your passport around.
The 2am cut-off
California law bans on-premises licensees from selling, giving or delivering alcohol between 2am and 6am [2]. Customers who knowingly buy in that window are also breaking the law, and venues can't let you keep drinking on the premises after hours [2]. So expect "last call" well before 2am, and don't be surprised when staff clear your glass as the clock ticks over.
Open containers
Los Angeles Municipal Code section 41.27 bans having an opened can or bottle of alcohol with intent to drink it in public. That covers streets, footpaths, parks, playgrounds, bus stations and other public places [3]. It's an infraction, which means a ticket. The beach is a public place too, so leave the stubbies at home for that Venice sunset.
Cannabis and other drugs
California allows adults 21 and over to use, carry and grow cannabis. You can use it on private property, but not in public places. Landlords can ban it, it's illegal on federal land such as national parks, and you can't take it across state lines [4]. Smartraveller warns that drug penalties in the US can be severe and often include mandatory minimum sentences [1]. It also notes that some medicines sold in Australia are illegal or controlled in the US, even with an Australian prescription [1].
Getting home safely
Here's the bit that surprises most new arrivals. LA has public transport, but it isn't built for getting home from a big night.
Ride-hail and taxis
Uber and Lyft are how most Angelenos get home. Before you get in:
- Match the plate, the car and the driver's name to the app.
- Share your trip with a friend from inside the app.
- Wait inside the venue until the car arrives.
- Never get into a car that pulls up offering a ride.
Metro and buses
Metro trains and buses do run at night, and Metro's overnight "Owl" bus service covers some routes [6]. Rail frequencies drop late, so check times on metro.net before you rely on it. For a 2am finish, a ride-hail is usually the safer bet.
Don't drive
If you've been drinking, don't drive. Smartraveller also warns that rental cars are often targeted by thieves, so don't leave valuables in the car, including in the boot [1].
Staying safe on a night out
Smartraveller advises exercising normal safety precautions in the US, but notes that violent crime is highest in cities, and that even low-crime cities have unsafe areas [1]. Pickpocketing and bag snatching happen in crowds and on public transport, and drink spiking can happen anywhere [1].
- Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket.
- Watch your drink being made and don't leave it.
- Stick with your group when you leave a venue.
- If a street feels wrong, get a car rather than walking.
| Number | Use it for |
|---|---|
| 911 | Police, ambulance and fire emergencies [1] |
Find people to go out with
LA can feel lonely at first, because everyone drives home to their own corner of the city. The fix is finding your crew early. Join Cooee USA, our Facebook group for Australians in the US. Members post gig buddies, happy-hour meetups and "who's watching the State of Origin?" threads, so you're not heading to the Troubadour on your own.
