Nightlife in Ho Chi Minh City: Bui Vien, rooftops and a Grab home

Saigon goes out every night of the week. A cold draught on a plastic stool costs a couple of Aussie dollars, and you can be on a historic rooftop 15 minutes later.

The short version

  • You must be 18 to buy alcohol, and Vietnam has zero tolerance for drink-driving, on a car or a motorbike [4].
  • Drug penalties include the death penalty, and having drugs in your system is itself a crime [1].
  • Methanol poisoning is a real risk, even in licensed bars. It can't be tasted or smelled [2].
  • A pint in Saigon averages less than half the Sydney price, but rooftop cocktails run VND 200,000–700,000 [6][9].
  • Get home with Grab or Xanh SM, not a stranger's motorbike [2].

The main nightlife areas

Ho Chi Minh City replaced its districts with wards in July 2025, but everyone still uses the old names. We do too.

Area What it's like Good for
Bui Vien, District 1 A 1,400-metre walking street of bars, clubs, dance venues and restaurants [5] Loud, cheap, backpacker-style nights
Dong Khoi and Lam Son Square, District 1 Hotel and rooftop bars around the Opera House [6] Sundowners, a dressier night
Thao Dien, old District 2 (An Khanh ward) Leafy expat area with craft beer, restaurants and quieter bars Living locally, a laid-back Friday
District 3 Cafés and small bars in French-era streets Date nights away from the crowds

Bui Vien

Bui Vien is the city's best-known party street. The pedestrian section runs for about 1.4 km, lined with bars, nightclubs and restaurants [5]. It's loud, fun and very busy at weekends. HCMC ranked third in the Asia-Pacific for nightlife in a 2025 city ranking, and streets like this are a big reason why [5].

District 1 rooftops

Around Lam Son Square and the Opera House, hotel rooftops are where expats take visitors for the view. Prices are much closer to home.

Thao Dien

Many Australians live in Thao Dien and drink there too. It's calmer than District 1, with plenty of restaurants and bars, and it's on Metro Line 1 for the trip into town.

Bars, rooftops and live music

We've only named venues we could confirm are open in 2026, with their official sites.

Rooftop bars

  • Saigon Saigon Rooftop Bar, Caravelle Saigon, Lam Son Square. A bar tied to the history of 1975, recently redesigned while keeping its chequered floor, louvred doors and old reporter's typewriter. It's open daily from 4 pm to 1 am, with live music every evening and drinks from VND 200,000 to 700,000. One visitor's warning: no air-conditioning, so dress for the heat [6].

Cocktail bars

Two Saigon cocktail bars made the 51–100 extended list of Asia's 50 Best Bars in 2026, a sign of how fast the scene is growing. District 1 has the most choice, from speakeasies to hotel bars.

Pubs and sports bars

District 1 has several Australian-run pubs that show the AFL and NRL. Our Australian restaurants, cafés and bars in Ho Chi Minh City guide lists the ones we could confirm for 2026.

Clubs and live music

Clubs cluster on and around Bui Vien. HCMC has about 500 karaoke parlours, bars and discos in total [5]. Live music is common in hotel bars and rooftops, including nightly sets at Saigon Saigon [6].

Rules that catch Australians out

Drinking age and drink-driving

Vietnam's alcohol law, in force since 1 January 2020, bans selling alcohol to anyone under 18 [4]. It also completely bans drink-driving for both car drivers and motorbike riders [4]. Any alcohol in your system can lead to a fine and possible jail [2]. That rules out riding your motorbike home after "just one".

Closing times

Bars don't run all night by default. In June 2026 the city proposed letting restaurants, pubs, lounges and beer clubs open until 2 am and karaoke venues until 4 am, with some zones able to trade through the night [7]. Until that's approved, expect many venues to close earlier than you'd hope.

Drugs

Penalties for all drug offences are severe, even for small amounts, and can include life in jail or the death penalty [1]. Marijuana in any form is illegal [1]. It's a crime to have drugs in your system, and police routinely run drug tests at private homes and parties [1][2]. A positive test can lead to charges even if you used the drug before arriving in Vietnam [2].

Carry ID

You must always carry photo ID. A printed copy of your passport photo page and visa is accepted [2]. Never hand your passport to a motorbike rental shop or landlord as a guarantee [2].

What a night out costs

Item Ho Chi Minh City Sydney
Pint of beer, average (April 2026) about $4.30 about $10.35 [9]
Draught beer in a simple bar (2026) about VND 30,000 [10] n/a
Rooftop bar drinks (2026) VND 200,000–700,000 [6] Similar to a city rooftop

The pint figures come from Finder's April 2026 price map, which averages Numbeo and Expatistan data [9]. The gap is huge at street level and small at the top end. A craft beer in Thao Dien or a cocktail on a District 1 rooftop costs close to Australian prices.

Getting home safely

  1. Use the apps. The UK government recommends official apps such as Grab and Xanh SM, which supply licensed vehicles [2].
  2. Book the whole trip in the app. Scammers sometimes pose as ride-hailing drivers [2].
  3. Check before you get in. Make sure the driver identifies themselves, and match the car and driver against the app [2].
  4. Ride Metro Line 1 if you're early. It links District 1 with Thao Dien and the east. It ran until 11 pm on National Day 2026 as a holiday extension, so on normal nights plan for an earlier last train [8].
  5. Don't ride yourself. Drink-driving rules are zero tolerance, riding without a helmet is illegal, and you need the right licence and permit to ride at all [2][4].

Staying safe

Saigon is a friendly city for a night out, but street crime and alcohol are the two big risks.

  • Methanol. Even small amounts can kill. Cases have involved drinks from licensed bars, shops and hotels in tourist areas. If you or a friend feels very unwell after drinking, get medical help immediately [2]. Stick to sealed bottles and well-known venues.
  • Drink spiking. Buy your own drinks, keep them in sight and be wary of snacks, drinks or gum from strangers [2].
  • Bag snatching. Thieves on motorbikes grab bags and phones. Hold your bag away from the traffic, and hand it over rather than risk injury [2].
  • Your phone on the kerb. Don't hold it out at the roadside while you wait for your Grab.

Emergency numbers: police 113; fire 114; ambulance 115. These lines operate in Vietnamese only, so have a local friend or your hotel ready to help [3]. The Australian Government's 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre is on +61 2 6261 3305.

Finding people to go out with

Saigon is more fun with a crew, and so is splitting a Grab home. Join Cooee Vietnam, our Facebook group for Australians in Vietnam, to find people for a rooftop sundowner, a Bui Vien night or the footy. For the Vietnam Swans, cricket and Anzac Day, see Aussie life in Ho Chi Minh City.
