Nightlife in Bangkok: world-class cocktails, 4am zones and the rules on the clock
Bangkok does nightlife at every price point, from a plastic stool and a cold Chang to bars ranked among the best on the planet. The catch is a set of rules about who can drink, when and where.
The short version
- The main areas are Sukhumvit (including Thonglor and Ekkamai), Silom, Royal City Avenue (RCA), Chinatown and the riverside.
- The legal drinking age is 20, not 18 [1]. Expect ID checks at clubs.
- Shops and restaurants can sell alcohol from 11am to midnight under the rules published in May 2026. Licensed bars and clubs keep their own licensed hours [3].
- Licensed venues in three zones (Silom and Patpong, RCA and New Phetchaburi Road, and Ratchadapisek) can open until 4am. Elsewhere, closing time is 2am [4].
- Vapes are illegal, even for personal use, and drug penalties include the death penalty [1].
Where to go out: the main areas
Bangkok is huge, so most people pick one area a night and stay there. Traffic makes hopping between them slow.
| Area | Vibe | Closing time for licensed venues |
|---|---|---|
| Sukhumvit (Nana to Asok) | Busy, mixed, lots of expat pubs | 2am [4] |
| Thonglor and Ekkamai | Polished, local and expat crowd, cocktail bars | 2am [4] |
| Silom and Patpong | Bars, clubs, night market, LGBTQ+ venues on Silom Soi 2 and 4 | Up to 4am [4] |
| Royal City Avenue (RCA) | A strip of big clubs, younger Thai crowd | Up to 4am [4] |
| Ratchada | Large venues, more local | Up to 4am [4] |
| Chinatown (Yaowarat) | Street food, then speakeasy-style bars | 2am [4] |
| Khao San Road | Backpacker central, loud and cheap | 2am [4] |
The 4am zones came in from 15 December 2023 and only apply to venues with a proper entertainment licence [4]. Bars elsewhere, including Thonglor, must still close at 2am [4].
Bars, rooftops, clubs and live music
Bangkok had seven bars on Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 [5]. We've named only bars we could confirm in 2026.
Cocktail bars
Bar Us on Sukhumvit Soi 26 was No. 6 in Asia in July 2026 [5] and No. 4 on The World's 50 Best Bars in October 2026 [6]. See us-bar.com.
Bar Sathorn is inside The House on Sathorn, a restored 19th-century mansion on North Sathorn Road [7]. It was No. 17 in Asia in 2026 [5]. See barsathorn.com.
Opium is a speakeasy-style bar above Potong restaurant in Chinatown [7], and was No. 25 in Asia in 2026 [5]. It's a good finish after a street-food crawl along Yaowarat. See opiumbarbangkok.com.
Other Bangkok names on the 2026 Asia list include Dry Wave Cocktail Studio in Thonglor, BKK Social Club at the Four Seasons, G.O.D in Chinatown and Aqua Bar [5][7].
Rooftops
Bangkok's skyline is made for rooftop bars, and most of the big hotels along the river and in Silom and Sukhumvit have one. Expect a dress code (no singlets, shorts or thongs), higher prices and a crowd at sunset. Book ahead for sunset tables, and keep an eye on the weather in the wet season, when rooftops can close at short notice.
Clubs and live music
RCA is the classic club strip, with big rooms playing EDM, hip-hop and Thai pop to a mostly Thai crowd. Silom and Thonglor have smaller clubs and DJ bars. For live music, Bangkok has a long-running jazz and blues scene, plus cover bands in many Sukhumvit pubs. Check venue Instagram pages for the week's line-up, because listings change fast.
The rules that catch Australians out
Drinking age and ID
The legal drinking age in Thailand is 20 [1]. Clubs often check ID at the door, so carry a photo ID. Keep your passport in your own hands: Smartraveller advises against handing it to third parties as a guarantee [1].
When you can buy a drink
Thailand's alcohol hours have changed several times since late 2025, so it's worth getting this right.
- Retail sales: Since May 2026, alcohol can be sold from 11am to midnight. The old 2pm to 5pm afternoon ban is gone [3].
- Bars and clubs: Licensed entertainment venues sell within their own licensed hours, and hotels and international airports are also exempt from the 11am to midnight window [3].
- Drinking at the wrong time or place: Under the amended Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, drinkers themselves can be fined up to 10,000 baht for drinking in prohibited hours or places [8].
- Holy days and elections: Sales and drinking can be banned on Buddhist holidays and voting days [1]. Bars often close, so check before planning a big night.
Vapes
E-cigarettes, vapes and refills are illegal in Thailand, even for personal use [1]. Buying or carrying one can mean up to five years' jail, a fine of up to 500,000 baht, or both [1]. Leave yours at home.
Drugs and cannabis
Thailand's drug penalties are severe and include the death penalty [1]. Even small amounts for personal use can mean long jail terms and deportation [1].
Cannabis is the one people get wrong. Its use is now limited to medical purposes with a prescription from a locally recognised professional, and using it in public is illegal [1]. The shopfronts you might remember from a few years ago are not a green light. If police ask for a urine test, you can ask to do it at a police station and call the Tourist Police on 1155 for an English-speaking officer [1].
What a night out costs
Bangkok is still much cheaper than Sydney for a drink, as long as you're not on a rooftop. Finder's April 2026 survey put a pint in Bangkok at about A$5.65, against about A$10.35 in Sydney [2].
| Where you're drinking | Cost compared with Sydney |
|---|---|
| Pint in a regular bar | About A$5.65 vs A$10.35, April 2026 [2] |
| Convenience store or street-side beer | Cheaper again |
| Top cocktail bars and rooftops | Closer to Sydney cocktail-bar prices |
Some money tips:
- Check for "++". Hotel bars and smarter venues add a service charge and VAT on top of menu prices.
- Watch the happy hours. Many Sukhumvit and Silom pubs run them early in the evening.
- Agree the price first for anything without a menu price, especially in tourist strips.
Getting home safely
Smartraveller says official metered taxis are generally safe; check the driver's ID card is on display [1]. For a tuk-tuk, motorbike taxi or unmetered taxi, agree the fare and route before you get in [1]. If you use Grab, check that the plate number and driver's name match the app before you get in [1].
The BTS Skytrain and MRT don't run all night, so plan for a taxi or Grab after the last trains. Be wary of friendly drivers offering cheap tours, which can end in commission shops [1].
Staying safe
- Watch your drink being made and don't leave it unattended. Drink spiking can happen anywhere [1].
- Only drink branded, sealed drinks. Smartraveller warns that methanol poisoning is a risk and as little as one shot can be fatal [1].
- Stay with people you trust in bars, clubs and taxis [1].
In an emergency, call 191 for police, 1155 for the Tourist Police, 1669 for an ambulance (or 1724 for an ambulance in Bangkok) and 199 for fire [1].
Find people to go out with
Bangkok is easy to go out in, and easier with company. Join Cooee Thailand, our Facebook group for Australians in Thailand, and ask who's up for a Friday night in Thonglor or a sunset beer by the river.
