Australian restaurants, cafés and bars in Auckland: Melbourne coffee, Aussie bakeries and the footy at 4.30

Drawing for Australian restaurants, cafés and bars in Auckland: the ExpatCooee boomerang with the word PUB, a beer glass, a meat pie and an oval football.
A taste of home in Auckland: a cold one, a pie and the footy on the big screen.

Auckland has very few Australian restaurants, mostly because it doesn't need them. The coffee, the pies and the beer culture are close enough to home that Aussie venues never really took off.

The short version

  • Honest answer first: we found almost no Australian-themed restaurants in Auckland, so this guide is short.
  • For Melbourne-style coffee, Dulcie in Devonport and its CBD sibling Fitzroy Deli were set up by a couple who came home from Melbourne's café scene [1][2].
  • Two Australian-born chains are everywhere: The Coffee Club, from Brisbane, and Bakers Delight, from Melbourne [3][4].
  • For the footy, the 2026 AFL Grand Final was screened at seven Auckland venues, including Schapiro's, The Fox and Full Time [5].
  • State of Origin is coming to Eden Park on 16 June 2027 [6].

Why there's not much here

In London or Dubai, an Aussie café is a taste of home. In Auckland, every café already serves a flat white, every dairy sells a pie and the supermarket shelves look familiar. Australians who move here tend to blend in quickly.

So instead of padding this out, we've kept it to the places with a real Australian link that we could confirm were open in 2026. We left out two of the AFL's listed watch-party venues, The Landing in Onehunga and Despensa in Howick, because we couldn't confirm their official websites. Cafés with a Melbourne accent

Dulcie

Area: King Edward Parade, Devonport

Dulcie was opened in 2023 by Scott Kennedy and Tamsyn Capper, with the aim of bringing Melbourne-style café culture to Auckland [1]. The couple moved back to New Zealand from Melbourne in 2021, where Scott had worked in cafés and bars [2]. It's a daytime eatery on the Devonport waterfront, with harbour views and a menu built on local produce. Take the ferry over from the city and make a morning of it.

Fitzroy Deli

Area: Shortland Street, Auckland CBD

Fitzroy Deli is the same team's sandwich shop, and it shares its name with the inner-Melbourne suburb. It made The Denizen's list of the best new cafés and bakeries of 2025 [1]. Expect focaccia sandwiches made to order, with fillings such as mortadella with stracciatella, or crispy chicken schnitzel with pickles and dashi mayo [1]. It's a weekday lunch spot for CBD office workers. It doesn't have its own website, so check Instagram for hours.

Australian-born chains

The Coffee Club

Area: Around 35 Auckland cafés, from Albany to Pukekohe

The Coffee Club started at Eagle Street Pier in Brisbane in 1989 and opened its first international store in Wellington in 2005 [3]. Its New Zealand site lists about 35 Auckland locations, including Customs Street, Mission Bay, Sylvia Park and Westfield Newmarket. It's not a destination, but if you want a big breakfast that tastes like a Queensland shopping centre on a Saturday morning, it's never far away.

Bakers Delight

Area: Bakeries across Auckland

Bakers Delight opened its first store in Hawthorn, Melbourne, in 1980. Its first bakery outside Australia opened in Auckland in 1995 [4]. Since 2022 the New Zealand business has been owned locally by Ben and Lucinda Frewin [4]. You know the drill: the loaves, the scrolls and the free sample at the counter. Use the store finder on its site for your nearest one.

Where to watch the footy and Origin

Auckland is two hours ahead of Melbourne and Sydney during the footy season. A 2.30pm grand final bounce at the MCG lands at 4.30pm in Auckland, which is about as civilised as it gets.

Schapiro's Sports Bar

Area: Symonds Street, Eden Terrace

Schapiro's is an American-style sports bar with booths, memorabilia and big screens, and it publishes a sports schedule on its site. It was one of the official AFL Grand Final watch-party venues in 2026 [5]. Check the schedule before the big games.

The Fox

Area: Customs Street West, Viaduct Harbour

The Fox is a British-style pub on the Viaduct, part of the Good Spirits Hospitality group, with a live sports schedule online. It also screened the 2026 AFL Grand Final [5]. It's the easy choice if you work in the CBD.

Full Time

Area: New North Road, Kingsland

Full Time is a sports bar owned by Mark Robinson, who also owns the Warriors [7]. It opened in 2024 with about 32 metres of screens, and its focus is league, union and UFC [7]. It screened the 2026 AFL Grand Final too [5]. Kingsland is also Eden Park's neighbourhood, so it's a natural pre-game stop when Origin comes to town.

Plan your big games

  1. Grand final day. In 2026, the AFL listed seven Auckland watch parties, including the footy clubs' own events at the Glenfield Greyhounds Club in Sunnynook and the Manurewa Rugby Club [5]. Check the AFL's list each September.
  2. State of Origin at Eden Park. Game II of the 2027 series is at Eden Park on Wednesday 16 June 2027, the first Origin game ever played in New Zealand [6]. General tickets go on sale to the public in November 2026, and the NRL has a waitlist [6].
  3. For the NRL. League is easy to find in Auckland thanks to the Warriors, and Full Time is built around it [7].
  4. Book. Origin night in Kingsland will be packed.

Aussie products

You'll find plenty of familiar brands on Auckland supermarket shelves, so the care-package list is shorter than in most cities. For the things you can't find, ask in Cooee New Zealand, our Facebook group for Australians in New Zealand. Members will tell you who stocks what, who's organising the grand final crew and who has a spare Origin ticket.
