Renewing a Greek residence permit: deadlines, delays and the road to long-term residence

Drawing for renewing a Greek residence permit: the ExpatCooee boomerang with the word RENEW, a wall calendar, an hourglass and a document folder.
Residence permits in Greece: watch the calendar, keep the folder.

Getting your first Greek permit felt like the hard part. The renewal is where people actually trip up, usually by a few weeks.

The short version

  • Apply to renew within the two months before your permit expires, online through the Ministry of Migration and Asylum platform [1][2].
  • Lodge before expiry and get your certificate of application submission. That certificate is what keeps you lawfully in Greece while the new card is processed [3].
  • Late? A new law extends the late window to three months after expiry, with an administrative fine [4]. Universities have quoted €100 per month of delay [3].
  • After five continuous years of lawful residence you can apply for EU long-term resident status: €150 fee, good Greek and steady income required [5].
  • Greek-Australians who already hold Greek citizenship don't need any of this. Your non-Greek partner might.

Why renewals go wrong

At home, a visa grant usually lands in your ImmiAccount and you move on. Greek residence is different: you hold a physical card (ADET or a uniform-format permit), it has a hard expiry date, and the renewal process takes months.

The three classic mistakes:

  1. Leaving it until after expiry. The day after your card expires, you're no longer lawfully resident unless you've already applied and hold a submission certificate [3].
  2. Gaps in insurance or tax. Renewals check that you met your tax obligations and kept insurance for the whole permit [2].
  3. Travelling on an expired card. Schengen border officers see an expired permit, not your good intentions.

How renewal works, step by step

Renewals are filed exclusively online for third-country nationals, and a lawyer can file on your behalf [1]. The general flow, based on the ministry's published procedure for employment permits [2], looks like this:

  1. Diary the window. Set a reminder for three months before expiry, and aim to file in the two months before it [2].
  2. Gather documents. Usually your passport, a recent photo (also as a digital file), a tax clearance or proof of tax compliance, proof of insurance across the permit period, and the documents specific to your permit type, such as an employment contract or proof of remote income [2].
  3. Pay the fees by e-paravolo, the Greek online fee system. For an employment permit that's €150 for the permit plus €16 for the card, €166 in total [2].
  4. Submit online through the migration ministry's platform using your TAXISnet codes.
  5. Download your certificate of online application submission. Print it, save it, and keep it with your passport [2].
  6. Attend biometrics when called, at the decentralised administration office for your area.
  7. Collect your card when it's ready. The ministry's stated processing deadline for an employment renewal is 90 days [2], though people in Athens often report longer waits.

If the renewal is refused, you can lodge an administrative appeal within two months, with a €50 appeal fee [2].

The fees, in one place

Item Amount Note
Permit fee (employment permits) €150 e-paravolo code 2107 [2]
Card printing €16 e-paravolo code 2119 [2]
Late renewal Administrative fine €100 per month quoted by the University of Athens [3]
Appeal against refusal €50 Within two months of the decision [2]
EU long-term residence application €150 Plus card costs [5]

Fees vary by permit category, so check the e-paravolo code for your own permit type before paying. Digital nomad and financially independent person permits have their own document lists.

The certificate of application submission is your lifeline. The University of Athens' guidance is blunt: if you stay after your permit expires, you're considered unlawful unless you applied for renewal before expiry and received that certificate [3].

What it means day to day:

  • Work and daily life: carry on, with the certificate and your expired card together. Employers, banks and KEP offices are used to seeing this pair.
  • Travel: this is the grey area. Re-entering Schengen on an expired card plus certificate can lead to questions at the border, and other Schengen countries may not recognise the certificate. As an Australian you can always enter Greece visa-free as a visitor, but that counts against your 90 days in 180 and doesn't fix your resident status. Avoid travel while pending if you can, and talk to your lawyer before booking.
  • Home: your Greek renewal doesn't touch your Australian citizenship or passport. If your passport is due to expire during the wait, renew it early, because Greek offices match permit records to the passport number.

What changed in 2026

Greece passed a major immigration law, Law 5275/2026, in March 2026. According to a summary by a Greek law firm, it [4]:

  • Keeps the requirement to file renewals within two months before expiry.
  • Extends the late-renewal window from one month to three months after expiry, subject to an administrative fine.
  • Sets a minimum two-year validity for secure categories such as dependent employment, with automatic renewal unless there are public order grounds.
  • Creates a new long-term permanent residence permit for family members of Greek citizens.

Implementing decisions take time, so check the ministry portal for which parts apply to your category now.

Five years in: EU long-term residence

After five years you can trade the renewal treadmill for EU long-term resident status, a longer-lasting permit with stronger rights in Greece and easier moves to other EU countries.

The requirements under the Migration Code, as summarised by the Asylum Information Database (updated July 2026) [5]:

  • Five consecutive years of lawful residence before you apply.
  • Absences are fine as long as none exceed six consecutive months and they total no more than 10 months over the five years.
  • Stable income at least equal to the annual minimum wage, plus 10% for each family member you sponsor, without relying on welfare.
  • Full health insurance equivalent to an insured Greek's, covering your family.
  • Integration: good knowledge of Greek and of Greek history and civilisation (or 12 years of legal residence).
  • Fee: €150, filed electronically through the migration ministry [5].

The absence rule catches Australians. A long Christmas in Australia plus a winter in Melbourne for family can quietly push you past six months in a row. Keep a travel log, with boarding passes, from year one.

Not every permit counts the same way toward the five years. Student periods, for example, are often counted only in part. Ask a lawyer to check your history before you apply.

Seven years in: Greek citizenship by naturalisation

Long-term residence is the usual stepping stone to citizenship. For third-country nationals, naturalisation generally requires seven continuous years of lawful residence, holding a qualifying status such as long-term residence [6].

You'll also need to pass the PEGP, the written Certificate of Adequacy of Knowledge for Naturalisation exam on Greek language, history, geography, culture and institutions. Exams run twice a year, in April and November, with a €150 exam fee and €200 to resit [6]. Pass rates in 2025 were roughly 45% to 51% per sitting, so most people study properly or sit it more than once [6].

The good news from home: Australia allows dual citizenship, so becoming Greek doesn't cost you your Australian passport.

Greek-Australians: you may be skipping all of this

If you're already a Greek citizen, by birth registration or descent, you don't need a residence permit at all. You live in Greece on your Greek ID or passport like any other citizen. Our citizenship by descent guide explains how to get on the registry.

Your non-Greek partner is another story:

Your household What the partner needs
Greek citizen plus Australian spouse Residence card for a family member of a Greek citizen
After the 2026 law A new long-term permanent permit for family of Greek citizens is created [4]
Neither partner Greek Standard national permits and renewals
One partner holds another EU passport EU free-movement residence card

Marriage certificates need an apostille and Greek translation, so sort that before you fly. Our AFM and gov.gr guide covers the paperwork.
