Australian restaurants, cafés and bars in Athens: a short list, honestly told
Athens has a huge Greek-Australian community but only a handful of venues that are properly Aussie. We found two we could verify, and both are worth the trip.
The short version
- Best Aussie brunch: Roasting Warehouse Athens in Neos Kosmos, the first European outpost of a Melbourne coffee roaster, with an Australian brunch menu [1][2].
- Best place to watch the footy: Athens Sports Bar in Makrygianni, set up by an Australian and long known as the bar that shows AFL and rugby league [5][6].
- Meat pies: there's no Aussie pie shop we could verify. Greek-Australians point to kimadopita (minced meat pie) as the closest local match [7].
- Vegemite and Tim Tams: hard to find in shops. Most people rely on care packages [8].
- We checked every venue below was operating in 2026. Plenty of others we found online were closed or couldn't be confirmed, so they're not here.
Australian cafés and brunch
Athens has a strong specialty coffee scene, so a flat white is easy. For the full Melbourne brunch, there's really one name.
Roasting Warehouse Athens
Area: Neos Kosmos, a short walk south of the Acropolis and Koukaki.
Why Australians go: This is a Melbourne business through and through. Roasting Warehouse started as a family roaster with cafés in North Melbourne and Airport West, plus South Fremantle in WA, and Athens is its first European store [2][4]. The Athens owner, George Paraskevopoulos, was born and raised in Melbourne, and he runs it with Nikos Antzaras, a Greek barista champion [3]. The company's own page describes the Athens flagship as combining "Australian brunch culture" with a Greek welcome [1]. When it opened, the executive chef was an Australian, David Stewart [3], and a 2026 profile says the chef still travels from Australia to train the team [2].
What to order: Coffee is roasted on site [2], so start there. A late-2026 write-up lists chilli scrambled pork with eggs, a buttermilk fried chicken waffle, hash browns with slow-cooked brisket and poached eggs, and ricotta hotcakes for the sweet tooth [2]. Before it opened, the owners also talked about putting Vegemite on every table [4]. We can't confirm that made it to the final menu, so ask.
Good to know: The space also hosts barista training and cupping sessions [2], so keep an eye out if you want to learn to pour a rosetta.
Australian bars and where to watch the footy
Athens Sports Bar
Area: Makrygianni, on Veikou Street, a few minutes' walk from the Acropolis Museum and Akropoli metro station [5].
Why Australians go: The bar was opened in 2009 by Australian Daniel Fisher and his brother, under the Athens Studios apartments [5][6]. The Greek Herald described it in 2023 as the first and only bar in Athens to broadcast AFL and rugby league [6], and Neos Kosmos covered it showing the 2019 Richmond v GWS Grand Final [9]. For years, it's been the obvious place to watch a grand final with a crowd.
What to order: A cold beer and a burger. The bar's site promotes burgers off the grill, cocktails and local beers [5]. We couldn't confirm any Australian beers on tap, so don't count on a Coopers.
Good to know: The current website mostly promotes European football fixtures, plus a Monday quiz and Friday karaoke, and doesn't mention AFL or NRL by name [5]. Before a big Australian game, message the bar to check it's on the screen. AFL matches land early in the morning in Athens, so ask whether they'll open early for the one you want.
Watching at home or with mates
If the bar can't show your game, the fallback is the same as everywhere else in Europe: a streaming subscription and a mate with a big TV. Our guide to Aussie life in Athens has a table of the time difference to Sydney and Melbourne through the year, so you know when to set the alarm.
Meat pies, Vegemite and the taste of home
This is where Athens falls short, and we'd rather tell you straight.
Meat pies. We couldn't find an Australian pie shop in Athens. In a 2023 Greek Herald piece, a Greek-Australian writer went looking and decided the closest thing was the kimadopita (minced meat pie) from a small bakery on Tritis Septemvriou Street [7]. We couldn't confirm that bakery's current status or find an official website, so we haven't listed it. The general tip stands, though: try the kimadopita at your local fourno (bakery). It won't come with sauce, but it scratches the itch.
Vegemite. Greek Australians have been swapping tips on where to find it for years. A 2022 Greek Herald piece noted only "a few stores" sell it and that most people get jars posted from Australia [8]. Pack it in your suitcase.
Tim Tams, Milo and the rest. Same story. Bring them back after each trip home, or ask anyone flying in.
Australian wine. We couldn't verify a venue in Athens that specialises in Australian wine. Greek wine is excellent, so this is the easiest homesickness to cure.

How to find the next one
Aussie venues in Athens come and go. To stay across them:
- Ask in the group. Join Cooee Greece, our Facebook group for Australians in Greece. New openings, footy screenings and "anyone seen Vegemite?" posts tend to show up there first.
- Read the Greek-Australian press. The Greek Herald and Neos Kosmos regularly cover Greek-Australians opening businesses in Greece. That's how we found both venues on this list.
- Check before you go. Message any venue before a big game. Hours and screenings change.
If you know an Australian-owned café, bakery or bar in Athens that's open now, tell us in the group and we'll check it for the next update.
