Australian restaurants, cafés and bars in Amsterdam: Melbourne brunch, Sydney mates and a dawn grand final

Updated 2026-11-05 · 6 min read

Drawing for Australian restaurants, cafés and bars in Amsterdam: the ExpatCooee boomerang with the word BRUNCH, a flat white cup, a plate of avocado toast and a narrow canal house.
A taste of home in Amsterdam: a flat white, smashed avo and a canal house.

Amsterdam's Aussie food scene is small but real: two Australian-run brunch spots, one outback-themed pub and a bar that opens before sunrise for the grand final.

The short version

  • For Melbourne-style brunch, Little Collins in De Pijp was co-founded by two Melburnians and still pours Little Creatures [1][2][3].
  • Box Sociaal was started by two mates who met in Sydney, and runs all-day Australian brunch in the Plantage and the Jordaan [4][6].
  • Coco's Outback on Rembrandtplein is an Aussie-themed pub with screens everywhere. Fun, loud and touristy [7].
  • For the footy, Belushi's on Warmoesstraat hosted Amsterdam's 2026 AFL Grand Final watch party, from 6.30am [8].
  • We couldn't confirm an Australian pie shop or an Aussie-run restaurant serving dinner every night, so we haven't listed one.

How we built this list

We started with stories about Australians who opened businesses in Amsterdam [1], then checked each venue against its own website and a listing or review from the past two years. Only places we could confirm are trading made it in.

What didn't make the cut: a couple of Aussie-founded cafés and roasters that have moved, changed hands or gone quiet online. We'd rather give you four places that exist than ten that might not. Know one we've missed? Tell us in the group.

Coffee and brunch

Amsterdam took a while to warm to the long Aussie brunch. These two helped.

Little Collins

Area: De Pijp, near Sarphatipark

Little Collins takes its name from the Melbourne laneway, and that's no accident. It was opened by Melburnians Laura Grusovin and Georgina Patterson with Dutch partner Stan Kerkhof [1]. A March 2026 review called the brunch menu clearly inspired by Australian café culture, built to work for an early coffee or a late-afternoon drink [2]. The drinks list has Little Creatures pale ale and Australian shiraz from McLaren Vale [3].

It sits at Eerste Sweelinckstraat 19F. Brunch runs most days, and it stays open into the evening later in the week, so check the hours before you go [10]. The same team runs Brio, an Italian-leaning restaurant two doors down that opened in 2024 [1], and a second venue, Collins, on Bilderdijkstraat in West for dinner and drinks [10].

Go for a weekend brunch with mates. It's small, so expect a wait at peak times.

Box Sociaal

Area: Plantage (near Artis Zoo) and the Jordaan

Box Sociaal describes itself as an all-day Australian brunch and dinner café [6]. Founders Alex Than Aye and Yudhi Srinivasan met as travelling friends and housemates in Sydney, landed at Schiphol in June 2017 and opened the first Box Sociaal about nine months later [4]. They wanted to bring Australia's all-day brunch culture to a city that didn't really have one [4].

There are two sites. The original on Plantage Middenlaan does brunch only. The larger Jordaan café at Bloemgracht 47 does brunch and, Thursday to Monday, dinner [6]. Lonely Planet singled out the Bloemgracht branch for its boozy Aussie-style brunch and suggested booking, especially on weekends [5].

The Plantage branch is an easy pick before Artis or the Hortus. The Jordaan one suits a long Sunday with friends who are visiting.

Pubs and bars

Coco's Outback

Area: Rembrandtplein

Coco's Outback is the city's best-known Australian-themed pub. Kangaroos turn up on the logo and the menu, there are about 30 screens, and a big screen goes up on the terrace for major matches [7]. It's open from 11am daily and until 3am or 4am late in the week [7].

Let's be clear about what it is: a busy tourist bar on one of Amsterdam's party squares, not an expat local. One reviewer summed up the food as lousy and the beer as warm, and there was no Australian beer on tap when they visited [7]. Go for a loud night or a big match with a crowd, not for a taste of home.

Belushi's Amsterdam

Area: Warmoesstraat, in the Old Centre

Belushi's is a backpacker-friendly sports bar a short walk from Centraal Station. It isn't Australian, but it was the AFL's official Amsterdam venue for the 2026 Grand Final watch party, at Warmoesstraat 129, with the first bounce at 6.30am [8]. For regular-season games, ring ahead and ask if they'll put yours on.

Where to watch the footy and cricket

Amsterdam is eight hours behind Melbourne during the AFL season, so most games land in your morning or overnight. That's why the grand final watch party starts at 6.30am [8].

  1. Check the AFL list in grand final week. The AFL publishes overseas watch parties each September [8].
  2. Find the local footy club. Australian rules has been played in the Netherlands for years, and clubs like the Amsterdam Devils tend to know where the Aussies are gathering. See our Aussie life in Amsterdam guide.
  3. Sort your streams. NRL games are on ESPN in the Netherlands, and Watch NRL covers fans outside Australia and the Pacific [9]. The AFL runs its own international streaming service.
  4. Enjoy the Ashes timing. Tests in England are only an hour behind Amsterdam. Home summers in Australia mean a night shift.

All the venues at a glance

Venue Type Area
Little Collins Café, brunch, wine bar De Pijp
Box Sociaal Café, all-day brunch, dinner Plantage; Jordaan
Coco's Outback Aussie-themed pub, sport Rembrandtplein
Belushi's Amsterdam Sports bar Old Centre

What about pies, Tim Tams and Vegemite?

We couldn't confirm a dedicated Australian pie shop or grocery in Amsterdam for 2026, so we won't pretend there is one. Most Aussies here stock up on Vegemite and Tim Tams on trips home, order from online shops that ship within the EU, and bake their own sausage rolls for grand final morning. Australian wine is easier: Little Collins pours it, and some Dutch wine shops and supermarkets stock a few labels.

Hours change often, especially in winter and around King's Day. Check the venue's own site before you go.
